Gomoku play guide
Introduction
Gomoku is a turn-based game of attack and defence on a 15×15 board. Black moves first. Connect at least five stones of your colour horizontally, vertically or along either diagonal to win. Against the AI, choose Easy, Normal or Hard and your stone colour. Online, use random matching or a room code to play a friend. This game applies its double-three restriction to both Black and White, so a move that develops two directions at once is not always legal.
Goal and rules
Think about extending your own stones and blocking your opponent's next winning move together. Four consecutive stones open at both ends are a strong threat: blocking one end leaves the other available for a fifth stone. If your opponent already has four stones connected, check the immediate winning squares before improving your own three-stone shape. A board edge or an opposing stone leaves less room to extend a line.
Desktop and mobile controls
- PC: Click an empty intersection with the mouse on your turn. Wait while the AI is thinking or your opponent is moving. Against the AI, you have up to three undos per game; they cannot be used after the game ends. Resign opens a confirmation prompt before ending the current game.
- Mobile: Tap an empty intersection once to preview your stone. Tap the same square again or press ✔ to confirm. Use that preview to inspect the space between stones rather than placing underneath your finger immediately. Online, the confirmed move must still be on your turn and on a valid empty square.
Scoring and records
Gomoku records wins and losses rather than a combined points score. Easy, Normal and Hard AI results and online results are stored separately in this browser. A draw adds neither a win nor a loss. Completing five stones in several directions does not award extra points. Treat AI results and online results as different practice records, and do not expect the same record to follow you automatically to another device or browser.
Ending and restarting
Connecting at least five stones ends the game. The result screen shows the reason and move count. A full board is a draw. Online, each turn has a 30-second limit; the player whose turn runs out loses. Resigning also ends the game. An online rematch requires both players to agree, and Black and White swap for the next game.
Tips for beginners
- Leave room around your first stones
Try the central area before committing to an edge, where you have room to extend horizontally, vertically and diagonally. Compare a move next to another stone with one that leaves a gap for a later connection. This makes your next-turn options easier to see.
- Check immediate opposing wins first
On every turn, find the squares where your opponent could make five with one move. If there is one urgent blocking square, examine it first. If four stones are open at both ends, remember that blocking only one end is not enough.
- Count crossing directions separately
A new stone that creates an open three both horizontally and vertically may be forbidden. Look beyond the number of connected stones: can one more move produce four with both ends open? If a candidate is marked forbidden, inspect a different extension or a defensive move.
- Use undo to identify the mistake
Against the AI, revisit a missed four-stone threat or the point where your move created a forbidden shape. Use your three opportunities to examine different mistakes rather than repeatedly rewinding a position merely because it feels unfavourable.
Advanced strategy
An open three in this game is not limited to three adjacent stones. The game checks whether adding one stone in that direction can produce four with both ends open. Connections containing a gap also need attention. However, a move that already completes at least five takes priority and is not blocked as a double-three. Online, practise a short review within your 30-second turn: urgent defence first, possible forbidden shapes second, and useful extension directions third.
Frequently asked questions
Does double-three apply only to Black?
It applies to both colours here. Use this game's forbidden-square indications and at-least-five winning condition instead of assuming the rules of another Gomoku variant.
Can I undo an online move?
Undo is available only against the AI. Online, check the empty square and remaining time before confirming. On mobile, use the preview to review your move.
Why does one mobile tap not place a stone?
The first tap previews a move. Tap the same square again or press ✔ to confirm. Even then, a move is rejected if it is not your turn, the square is occupied or it creates a forbidden double-three.
