Gomoku openings and the double-three restriction

Learn early connections, open threes and fours, the restriction shared by both colours and a move-checking routine for this game's 30-second online turns.

Hide in Game editorial · 2 October 2026

A first stone should leave future directions

Black moves first, and at least five stones of the same colour connected horizontally, vertically or diagonally win. One opening move does not determine the whole game, but available space affects later choices. Near the centre, it is easier to examine all four line directions; near an edge, you cannot extend beyond the board. Start by placing a stone and describing two or three possible future connections.

Do not make one habit of always touching your opponent's stones or always staying far away. Adjacent stones form a continuous line easily, but the opponent can read it easily too. Leaving one gap reserves a possible later connection, while giving the opponent a chance to claim that gap first. Examine the current shape together with the empty squares needed on your next turn.

Distinguish an open three from an open four

An open four consists of four consecutive stones with both ends empty. Blocking one end still leaves a fifth-stone win at the other end. Here, an open three means a shape that can become such an open four with one additional move. Three visible stones do not automatically qualify: check whether an opposing stone or the board edge closes one end.

Three stones with a gap can matter too. If filling that gap produces four consecutive stones with empty squares at both ends, the shape can be detected as an open three. Identify the actual square that one more stone could occupy instead of counting stones alone. A threat based on an unavailable square or one already occupied by the opponent is not a useful next-turn plan.

Read a crossing double-three square by square

Assume the surrounding squares are empty except for the four stones described below. Number rows and columns from 1 to 15. Suppose your stones are at row 8 columns 7 and 9, and at column 8 rows 7 and 9, with row 8 column 8 empty. If the horizontal ends at row 8 columns 6 and 10 and the vertical ends at column 8 rows 6 and 10 are also empty, placing in the centre can produce open threes horizontally and vertically. A candidate that creates those two directions simultaneously is a double-three.

The same restriction applies to White as well as Black here. When a candidate is marked forbidden, inspect the two separate directions rather than repeatedly pressing the square. Change one connection first or choose another defensive square to rebuild your plan. Familiarity with a different Gomoku ruleset does not mean White is unrestricted in this game.

Check a completed win before a forbidden shape

If the proposed move already connects at least five, this game gives that win priority. For example, your consecutive stones in columns 4 through 7 of one row become five by placing in empty column 8. Even if open threes appear in other directions, this immediately completed five is not blocked as a double-three. Distinguish that direct win from a candidate that has not yet made five.

Use the same order when defending. First identify squares where the opponent could win with one move, then examine open fours and threes if there is no immediate win. Extending your own three may look attractive, but missing the opponent's fifth stone changes the priority. Once an open four exists, blocking just one end may not solve the threat; review its space while it is still developing from an open three.

Use AI undo to review a missed idea

You have three undos per AI game. When the AI has replied, an undo normally takes back your move and its reply so that it is your turn again. Give the mistake a specific name: a missed open four, an overlooked empty square or two simultaneous open threes. Choose one or two alternative squares to examine instead of repeating the same decision.

Easy, Normal and Hard provide different practice settings. Familiarity with Easy does not mean every Hard attack can be answered in the same way. Reviewing a direction missed in your recent game is more useful for the next move than checking only the win-loss count. Undo is unavailable after a game has ended, so use the final position to choose something to check in your next game.

A short checklist for 30-second online turns

Online turns last 30 seconds, and the player who runs out of time loses. Review an immediate opposing win, a possible double-three in your candidate and the space left after the move, in that order. Narrow the choice to a few squares, check that they are empty and decide instead of endlessly changing candidates. On mobile, leave time to tap the previewed square again or confirm with ✔.

Online does not offer AI-style undo. Read the current state and timer if a connection issue appears or the opponent's turn seems long. Both players must agree to a rematch after the game ends, and colours swap for the next game.
