Neon Blocks guide: planning three blocks and counting combos

Plan the order of three blocks, preserve useful space, and understand line, combo and all-clear scoring using the game’s actual rules.

Plan the three blocks before choosing the first move

Neon Blocks is a puzzle played on an 8×8 board with three blocks in the tray. Blocks cannot rotate, and a new set appears only after you have used all three. Looking at the whole tray makes planning easier than dropping the first shape that happens to fit. Empty cells do not guarantee another move: the game ends when none of the remaining shapes fits.

The principle here is not to place the largest block first every time. Locate a place for the awkward shape, but also check whether clearing a line with another block would create a better place for it. A nearly complete line is a useful opportunity, not a reason to ignore the shape of the space left after the clear.

Check three things before placing a block

First, identify the most awkward of the three shapes. Long bars need uninterrupted straight space; a 3×3 square needs a broad area. Bent shapes such as an L also require empty cells in the right orientation. Two shapes with the same number of cells can need very different spaces.

Second, find the places where that shape can fit now. Third, consider whether those places will remain after placing the other blocks or clearing a line. If there is only one candidate, avoid filling it with a small block. If there is no candidate yet, look for an order in which a smaller block clears the space first.

Connected space matters more than an empty-cell count

Single empty cells scattered around the board will not hold a large shape. When several placements are possible, compare how much connected empty space each leaves. Building from a corner can be convenient, but it is not always the best move. Existing blocks and nearly completed lines change which position is useful.

The shape pool includes a 3×3 square and horizontal or vertical five-cell bars. You cannot always reserve space for both, but they provide a useful warning against leaving only tiny holes. Larger shapes become more likely as the score rises, so a layout that depended on narrow gaps early on may become harder to maintain later.

Separate line bonuses from combo multipliers

Placing a block first earns one point for each cell in that block. A line-clear bonus is added: 100 for one line, 300 for two, 600 for three and 1,000 for four. If the same placement completes both rows and columns, the completed lines in both directions are counted together.

Consecutive moves that clear lines raise the combo from ×1 to ×2, ×3 and beyond. This multiplier applies to the line-clear bonus. A placement that clears no line breaks the combo. Receiving a new tray does not itself break it: clearing a line with the first block of the next set continues the existing combo.

Why one move earns 104 points and the next earns 203

Suppose a four-cell block clears one line at combo ×1. The move earns four placement points plus 100 clearing points, for 104. If a following three-cell block clears one line, the combo becomes ×2: 3+100×2 equals 203. The three placement points are not doubled.

If the next two-cell block clears nothing, it earns two basic points and breaks the combo. A later five-cell block clearing one line starts again at ×1 and earns 105. These examples assume other blocks remain on the board after each move. If a clear empties the entire board, an additional all-clear bonus of 1,000 times the current combo is awarded.

Should you clear several lines together or clear repeatedly?

A multi-line clear raises the base clearing bonus and opens several lines of space at once. A sequence of clearing moves raises the combo multiplier. Neither is always the better choice. Consider the current combo, the number of lines cleared and the space needed by the remaining shapes.

A move that preserves the combo but fills your only broad empty area may leave the next block stuck. A tempting bonus is less useful if it immediately ends the run. When space is tight, prefer an arrangement with more possible placements left, then look for another clearing sequence once the board is open again.

Use the same questions in short practice runs

Instead of finding the maximum bonus on every move, build a habit around three questions: Which block could still fit if I leave it until last? Which lines will this placement clear? Will a large shape still have somewhere to go afterward? Check the placement preview before releasing a dragged block to catch mistakes in counting empty cells.

After a game ends, review the final three shapes before focusing on the score. Was a straight channel broken? Did you use a large square area too early? Could a different placement order have cleared a needed line? Aim to correct one specific mistake on the next run so that the reason for getting stuck becomes clearer.

Restarting and checking your records

On PC, Esc or P opens the menu, where Restart begins a fresh run. After game over, use Play again or Enter. Place blocks with a mouse drag on PC or a touch drag on mobile. There is no rotate or flip button, so always plan using the orientation shown in the tray.

When online rankings are connected, a completed run with a positive score is submitted. Check weekly and all-time records on the result screen and in the trophy menu. An upload error means the online entry was not completed. Treat the best score stored in this browser separately from your online ranking.
