Joseon History and Folklore Behind the Game

Joseon Archer adds plenty of imagination for fun, but its names and props come from real Joseon history and folklore. Here are some stories worth knowing alongside the game. The game's settings are fiction; please read them apart from historical fact.

The Yeongnam Road

The Yeongnam Road was the main road linking Hanyang and Dongnae in the Joseon era, used by scholars, merchants and officials of the Yeongnam region. Saejae (Joryeong) pass in Mungyeong is known as its most rugged stretch. The game's eight cities follow it: Hanyang, Suwon, Chungju, Mungyeong, Andong, Daegu, Gyeongju and Dongnae.

Suwon Hwaseong

Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon was built under King Jeongjo and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, famed for combining defense functions with building technology.

Andong Hahoe Village and the Hahoe mask

Hahoe Village in Andong preserves the look of a Joseon yangban village and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The masks of its Hahoe mask dance inspired the game's "Hahoe Mask" relic.

Daegu Yangnyeongsi

The Daegu herbal medicine market is said to have started in the mid-17th century under King Hyojong. Because medicinal herbs from across the country gathered there, Daegu in the game offers the Yangnyeongsi Ginseng relic.

Gyeongju

Gyeongju was the capital of Silla for nearly a thousand years and still has tombs and ruins everywhere. The game's Silla skeleton soldiers and Silla Phantom General come from the idea of guardians of those ancient tombs.

Dongnae

Dongnae corresponds to today's Busan and was the site of the Battle of Dongnae Fortress in 1592 at the start of the Imjin War. The story is told of magistrate Song Sang-hyeon who died defending the fortress. In the game Dongnae is shown as a sea and tidal-flat setting.

Joseon bows and weapons

The gakgung is Joseon's signature bow, made by bonding buffalo horn, mulberry wood and sinew. The pyeonjeon, also called the "baby arrow", is a short arrow fired through a half-bamboo tube called a tonga. The singijeon was a gunpowder weapon developed under King Sejong, and some forms were fired in volleys from a hwacha cart. The matchlock gun was lit by a burning fuse and came into wide use in Joseon after the Imjin War. All numbers and effects in the game are set for fun.

Clothing

The gat is the scholar's signature hat and the jeollip a felt hat worn by military officers. The dopo is a wide-sleeved scholar's robe, and the cheollik an officer's robe pleated at the waist for easy movement. The Scholar and Officer characters' outfits come from these.

Goblins, the fox and the Grim Reaper

The dokkaebi (goblin) appears widely in Korean folktales, sometimes teasing people with a club and sometimes granting fortune. The gumiho is a nine-tailed fox famous for stories of transforming into a human. The jeoseung saja is said to take the souls of the dead to the underworld. Maiden ghosts and egg ghosts are common in traditional ghost stories. The imugi is a great serpent that failed to become a dragon, and the bulgasari a beast said to eat iron. The game gathers them all together as yokai.

If a yokai caught your eye, read its entry in the Yokai Codex.
